Today this feels all the more poignant.
I am currently writing (in outline) about the post-World War I period and as I do so I realise that, as well as remembering with gratitude, whatever I write about this time has to be executed to the best of my ability. I would not in any way wish to trivialise in my work those very real and, relatively speaking, still immediate travails. However difficult the times we now face may be, they are, on the whole, nothing compared to the horrors and privations of those times.
“Let us resolve afresh at the dawn of this new century… that this might be a truly pacific peaceful century.”
We can but hope and try.
