During the If I Never launch week, I plan on answering as many questions about the writing of the novel itself and my approach to writing in general. I will also, if asked, discuss the writers who have influenced me and the various other ways in which life/art impacts on my work.
So, if you would like to ask a question, now’s your opportunity. If possible, please ask the question here rather than on Twitter, Facebook etc.
Fire away!

Hi Gary,
Here are a couple of questions.
How did you come up with the title?
When did you first get the idea about writing this novel?
Are your characters inspired by real life people?
Thanks,
Frederique
Hi Gary, what keeps you focused and confident about your writing? How does it stay fresh in your mind if you are constantly rereading and checking your work?
Hi Gary,
I have a couple of questions for you.
How does your family feel about you becoming a published author?
Have you had to make many compromises to your artistic integrity?
Finally what has been the best thing about becoming published?
Hi Gary!
I’ve mentioned before that I wondered how you had such a good knowledge of grotty kitchens when your mum’s is so pristine. Extending that thought, it is clear from your “blurb” and the first chapter of the novel that it looks at some of the less salubrious aspects of life, so how does a nice refined chap like you get insights into that world?
Hi Gary. I wanted to ask how close you become to your characters while writing your novels, and if you find it hard to let them go when it is time to finish writing and end the book?
Also…how much planning do you do before beginning writing? Do you know all the story and where you’re going with it before you write, or do you start with few plans then let the story shape itself as you write?
Finally….Does being published make a difference to how you feel about this book and your work?
Best wishes, and love to the North. Oh, and how come Frances has seen your mothers kitchen and I haven’t??!
Hi Gary (again), Frederique asked if your characters are based on real life people, if they are do you worry that they may read your novel and recognise themselves?
