Today, unless it’s slipped under your radar — not difficult, given the state of world economies etc — you may be aware that it’s Global Handwashing Day, the day set aside by an organisation called Health in Your Hands to promote the practice of handwashing with soap.
If you’re a regular visitor to Gary William Murning Online, you probably already know that I’m not always inclined to take these various initiatives all that seriously and when I first heard about this on the radio this afternoon it was my intention with this post to, well, frankly, rip the piss out of it. However, after careful consideration and a quick perusal of the associated website I’ve decided that promoting handwashing — however basic it may seem to many of us — is not deserving of my satirical ramblings, and is, in fact, an extremely positive and simple step towards good health.
From the Global Handwashing Day website:
This isn’t, of course, something that only needs to be promoted in developing countries. I’ve always been fairly particular — very particular, actually — about hygiene and it still amazes me how many people in the developed world neglect to wash their hands before preparing food or after going to the lavatory. The pace at which we live makes it somewhat understandable, but it still isn’t a pleasant thought — and I’m sure we all, on occasion, can benefit from a gentle reminder.
With this in mind, I’d just like to say — with my customary delicacy — WASH YOUR SODDING HANDS RIGHT THIS MINUTE!
This public service announcement was brought to you in association with Imperial Leather soap.
