People at the very top of Reagan’s candidacy promised and then smuggled arms to Iran in exchange for an Iranian promise to hold the prisoners until after the election, which simultaneously made Carter look helpless and Reagan look heroic when they were released hours after his inauguration.
Yes, that actually rings a bell, Kihm. Frankly, in spite of his political relationship with Thatcher, I always considered Reagan little more than a bumbler in a big hat. A cowboy in the best British tradition of the word 😉
